Humans in Modernity

I make a habit of walking to my activity of choice (indoor climbing). I’ve had the opportunity to see a lot of people running, walking, biking and skating. The majority feature posture and gait issues.

Early morning runners mostly run with aligned mechanics with a few hints of weak spots here and there, but later in the day things get grim. Upper crossed, lower crossed and pronation distortion syndromes, both symmetric or asymmetric examples are evident everywhere, especially 20 somethings walking in the neighborhood. The posture and gaits are a bit hard to watch. Orthopedic surgeons drive by checking off the money they will be making off future clients.

It’s too much sitting. Sitting to drive. Sitting to relax. Sitting for work. The toll is immense. I should know because I’ve had to grapple with the consequences myself.

Even those who stay in shape should mind past asymmetries. Rowing starboard for 4 years or more can do it. The body doesn’t even out as neural habits are ingrained and the imbalances don’t go away through neglect.
